How to Join Your First Pickleball Event in Japan

Once your rallies start lasting, the next step is events. That does not mean jumping straight into serious competition. Japanese pickleball has several doors, and you can pick the one that fits.

Know your event types

Meetups and open play The most casual entry point: rotating games with whoever came. Many are beginner-friendly, perfect for "not ready for a tournament, but I want to play with new people."

Intro sessions and lessons Events built for first-timers, starting from the rules. Paddle rentals are often available. If you want the rules first, see what pickleball is.

Local tournaments Hosted by local clubs and organizations, usually with skill and age categories. A beginner or intermediate bracket is a great tournament debut.

Pro tours and international events Professional circuits like the PPA Tour and MLP run overseas. Pikuru lists these pro events for reference (they are not Pikuru events, and Pikuru is not affiliated with the tours). Watching the world's best adds a whole new dimension to the sport.

Advice for your first tournament

  • Use the level labels: Competitive, Advanced, Intermediate, Beginner. Enter at your level or one below for maximum fun
  • Doubles partners: some tournaments require a partner, others pair you up on the day. Read the event details carefully
  • Experience over results: your first tournament is also the fastest way to meet a dozen players at your level at once. Connect with them on Pikuru afterwards

One day, host your own
